Food is one of the most important parts in human life. However, in China we regard it not only as a necessity but also a kind of culture. We Chinese have created lots of delicacies. It’s no doubt that food is a kind of art. It’s the accumulation of Chinese traditional culture.

And we can learn that our catering is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese philosophy. In turn a lot of philosophy thinking can be found in catering.

It was first seen when we offered sacrifices to ancestors. Different from western countries, from generation to generation, we Chinese prepare different foods as sacrifices to our forefathers, gods, and goodness.

While a brunch of flowers is enough for western people. According to the theory of the interaction between Heaven and man, we Chinese tend to believe the souls remain alive after one pass away. Like living people the souls need to eat, too.

So foods work as a bridge for living people to communicate with the dead.On the other hand, we Chinese advocate eating with the pace of nature’s change. The change of seasons and weather must be taken into account while choosing what to eat.

The 24 solar terms are natural arrangements for our eating. That’s to say different vegetable, fruits and crops are ripe in different time. So one of the secrets to keep in good health is to eat what is ripe in that time. Eating with the guidance of the principles of nature’s change is the wisdom of our forefathers.

We all know that foods can provide us with all kinds of nutrition. But we should never stop here, for foods can be used as medicines and sometimes they are even more effective. Dating back to the Warring States, the book, HuangDi NeiJing, has put forward the thought about scientific diets that one should more crops and a little meat and fruits.

The famous doctor BianQue also contributed to the thought of food therapy. He thought when one got ill, he should first have some foods, and medicine was the second choice. Another medical masterpiece, Compendium of Materia Medica also contains this thought.

In this book, there are nearly 300 kinds of crops, vegetable as well as fruits and 400 animals. All of these can be used both as medicines and foods.So to some extent, food therapy is an important part in traditional Chinese medical science. No doubt, it is a creation of Chinese.

In Chinese culture, we attach much importance to harmony and neutralization. We think nothing can compare with this. We believe that we should live a balanced life in all aspects. That’s to say the thought that the more, the better doesn’t applied to all situations.

For example, the input and output, the tough time and golden years, along with the material life and spiritual life should be kept in a state of balance and neutralization. Once we put too much emphasis on one aspect, the balance will be lost, thus making it hard for us to move on.

While eating, we should obey this rule. This may account for those who are choosy in food can get ill easily. So according to this theory, we should set aside our personal preference, and try to keep a balanced diet. It also has a reflection on cooking.

As we all know a good cook should be qualified to use condiments properly. Too much will make the dish too salty and too much sugar will make it too sweet.Under the principle of harmony and neutralization, foods are arranged in order, so as to our health.

The traditional philosophical thoughts are broad and profound, and the same goes for traditional Chinese food culture. Seeing from what has been mentioned above, we can know that philosophical ideas can be seen in every aspects of Chinese food culture.

The theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements lays the foundation of Chinese food culture. It provides the basic principle of eating. And the theory that man is an integral part of nature shows our respect to nature. Food therapy must be the creation of Chinese. And the thoughts of harmony and neutralization are a kind of peace we all want to achieve.

To a certain degree, the traditional food culture is a key to the door behind which wisdom and philosophical ideas are hidden.
