Britain is a typical western country while China is eastern. Both countries have quite different national conditions and ideologies, so are their education systems. However, as for some aspects of education, they also share some similarities.

Actually, no matter what kind of education, the best education system is the one that suits the situation of a country. And like in China, British education system also has its important value in Britain. Nowadays, education is regarded as a very important factor to success in life. No matter how different our social and cultural environments are, most of us approve of education’s positive effects on society.

However, as for the specific education system, different countries have different opinions. After all, there are indeed differences in national conditions and ideologies, which influence the development of education. So it does in Britain and China. On the surface at least, British and Chinese education systems seem quite different.

First I want to mention the types of education systems in two countries. Compared with the unique education system in Chinese mainland, the education system in Britain generally can be classified into two types: the education system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the education system in Scotland.

The reason is that education in the United Kingdom is a devolved matter with each of the countries of the United Kingdom having separate systems under separate governments. But as for China, the unified education system is established by the Chinese central government. So the compare and contrast are based on the general situation about the education system in both countries. One obvious difference is the law protection for education.

In Britain, if a child fails to attend school, a School Attendance Office will come to his house to find out why, and if there is no good reason the parents may be prosecuted. From such a case, we can figure out the harsh law protection for British education to some extent. In contrast, although China has also adopted a nine-year compulsory schooling system, which means all children are required to attend school for at least nine years.

However, as a matter of fact, the Chinese government doesn’t carry out this law effectively owing to various reasons, such as the large population, the economic strength and so on. Every year there are countless students who cannot go to school or leave school without completing the nine-year basic educating. It is really an urgent problem we Chinese should solve.

Yet another difference refers to the religion. British schools are required to provide religious education and daily collective worship for all pupils, provided parents do not think otherwise. What’s more, to protect freedom of belief, the government allows local education authorities and schools to determine the content of their religious instruction according to the demand of the local community.

As they claim that the purpose of religious education is to cultivate pupils’ moral sense. However, things are totally different in China. Chinese education pays little attention to the religion. There’s no such classes related with religion in students’ curriculums except only a few in university students’. Therefore most Chinese students don’t have religion belief. Actually they are required to abandon any religion belief if they want to join the party. The method for cultivating the moral sense in China is to offer courses related with morality, which also works well.

Other areas of difference involve issues of educational ideas and methods. As we all know, British education is famous for strictnessstandard and practicality. They pursue the effectiveness of their education and place their student at the central position. For example, in a British class, it is the stage of all the students. Every student has the chance to perform themselves, to show their own opinions, to make experiments by themselves. In the meanwhile, the teacher only plays a role of a guider and an organizer.

In a word, the students are the stars in class. I think such an educational idea is what we Chinese should learn from. In China, the most common situation is that the class is almost the show of the teacher himself. The teacher teaches what he is supposed to teach and the students listen to what the teacher tells them accurately and recite it again and again after class. Few whys and wonders are put up with in or out of the class.

In this case, students are just like a sort of animate sausage casing and into the empty casing, the teachers are supposed to stuff “education”. Fortunately, nowadays the Chinese government has attached more attention to this problem and taken some actions. But Rome is not built in one day. So it is still a long way for us to go. In spite of these differences, these two education systems share several important similarities. Both, for example, fall into such categories: pre-school education, primary school, secondary school and university.

And except some small details, primary school and secondary school are both compulsory education in both systems. The 1996 Education Act of the UK states: the parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education suitable to his age, ability and aptitude and to any special educational needs he may have either by regular attendance at school or otherwise. And in China there’s also a nine-year compulsory schooling system. What’ more, students are free to accept the compulsory education in some rich areas in China, which really makes great progress.

Both system, moreover, have the standardized test prepared for students who want to receive higher education. In Britain, the GCSE; while in China the College Entrance Examination. Unlike the US education that puts more emphasis on equal chance and equal treatment, both tests tend to segregate students on the basis of their academic ability. If they want to be admitted to a better university, such as the Oxbridge university or Cambridge University, there’s no doubt that they should work harder. Last but not least, academic years within the systems are the same.

Nowadays, most universities have chosen to have two academic years to meet the needs of this society and in China, most of the schools, including primary schools and secondary schools, have two academic years. And I think this academic -year system is quite reasonable.

British and Chinese system, different, yet alike. We do have so many to talk about them. That’s really a long story to tell. However, what conclusion we can draw is that just like Chinese education plays a vital role in China as we Chinese know, British education also has its very important value in British society. First, as a developed nation that has limited natural resources, Britain greatly depends upon professionals and a skilled workforce.

This makes it necessary for Britain to pay great attention to the development of science and technology. And education is just the key point. Schools are investing in human capital, the cradle of the pillars of the growth of the motherland, is the Pure Land and shaping good minds. With the proper education, Britain has nurtured so many qualified citizens. And with the effort of those outstanding talents and the help of all the people in the country, nowadays Britain has become one of the world powers all around the world.

What’s more, Britain’s education aims to develop the abilities of individuals for their own benefits and that of society as a whole, which become an important factor for British people’s thinking highly of individualism. It is known to all that the British pay great attention to the privacy, which plays a important role in British culture. Home to some of the oldest universities in the world, British education has been synonymous with excellence.

And nowadays more and more foreign students tend to enroll in British schools, especially the outstanding universities. However, nothing can be perfect. So there are still some shortages in British education system or there are more efforts the British can spare to make their system more impeccable. Actually there are reports showing that today Britain begins to shift focus to Chinese education.

Besides, with the tendency of globalization, the British also has a plan to attach an internationalization strategy to their education. So in the future, it is most likely that the education will be on its internationalization path and there will be more and more cooperation between Britain and China. I am strongly looking forward to a prosperous world with the development of our education.
