The idea of 'talent is the first competitive power' has been accepted by most of companies in the world. However, with the fast growth of the global economy, there are more and more opportunities for people to choose their jobs and employee turnover increased faster and faster.

How to attract talents, develop and retain talents is a question needed to be solved for companies' human resource manager. Therefore, human resource management is vital to the development of companies. However, there are many ethics problems happening to the human resource managers, which have lots of bad influence to the existence and development of the companies.

So it is very necessary for scholars to study the importance of good ethics in human resource management. This Essay will take 'good ethics in HRM encourage employee motivation' as the topic to analyze the importance of good ethics in human resource management by comparing the different ideas about the relation between good ethics and employee motivation. Human resource management is vital to the development of companies since the human resource managers are responsible for taking measures for attracting, developing and retaining talents.

However, there are many ethics problems happening to the human resource managers, which have lots of bad influence to the existence and development of the companies. So it is very necessary for scholars to study the importance of good ethics in human resource management. The purpose of this essay is to study the importance of good ethics in human resource management to employee motivation.

There are six parts in this essay started by an introduction. In the second part, this essay will introduce ethics and employee motivation in HRM. This essay will take 'good ethics in HRM encourage employee motivation' as the topic to analyze the importance of good ethics in human resource management by comparing the different ideas about the relation between good ethics and employee motivation in the third parts and the fourth part. In the fifth part, this essay will give the opinions of the author of this essay about this topic.

And a conclusion will be made at last. Human Resource Management, is 'implicated in the management of human labor exchanges and, ipso facto, the lives of human beings'. In other words, human resource management is very important to the development and existence of companies since the human resource managers have the responsibility to manage, develop, train and retain the employees, the fundamental power to grease the wheels of companies.

However, ethical problems have arisen and will arise continually in human resource management. In a broad sense, ethics is a branch of philosophy which provides the standard to evaluate the rightness and wrongness of people's behavior. And in the field of HRM, ethics mainly involves those systematizing concepts about right and wrong behaviors of human resource managers. According to Huang, there are three levels of meanings about motivation, firstly, the process of being motivate; secondly, the driving power, precipitating factor and external incentive and thirdly, the status of being motivated. Motivation is one of important functions of management and will develop constantly with the development of human management activity.

The essence of human resource management in modern companies is managing people through motivation. Human resource managers always design a high environment and carry out some reward distribution systems to standardize employees' behavior, motivate employees and guide and adjust employees' pace identically to realize company's objectives.

Motivation not only can attract more talents to work for the company but also can further arouse employees' creation and innovation spirit. Some scholars consider that ethics, as one of the special spirit factors, has a special status and plays an important role in motivation to employees. But other scholars think that there is no relation between ethics and employee motivation.

Whether there is some relation between ethics and employee motivation or not is deserved to be researched. Ethics in human resource management mainly involves those systematizing concepts about right and wrong behaviors of human resource managers. There are some authors who have written some articles and stated the opinion of 'good ethics encourage employee motivation'. In the article of 'The Analysis of the Ethics Motivation in the Management to Employees', according to Huang, in the process of current employee management, the losses rate of the excellent talents is always increasing and it is difficult for the human resource managers to control employees' loyalty to their own companies by the material means, such as money. Ethics is playing an important and special role in the process of human resource management.

As far as Huang is concerned, good ethics in human resource management can help to arouse and prompt the employees to do their jobs in accordance with the companies' desire and then the employees can have the objectives which are identical with the purpose of the companies. Winstanley and Woodall stated in the article of 'The ethical dimension of human resource management' in 2002 that there were lots of ethical problems in human resource management, such as egoism, utilitarianism and the like.

They also pointed that good ethics could encourage employee motivation and then improved the productivity from the opposite aspect. In this article, the authors stated that the human resource managers were in bad ethics is a highly risk in terms of both retaining employee support and also maintaining profitability and effectiveness. In the article of 'Strategic Human Resource Management as Ethical Stewardship', the authors including Cardwell, Truong, Linh as well as Tuan pointed out some companies took the management style of 'servant' in HRM and the servant leadership are at the heart of ethical stewardship.

The employees do not have an equal status relative to their managers and they are just the servants to the managers and under this circumstance, their motivation would be lowed. In the article of 'Ethical Standards for Human Resource Management Professionals: A Comparative Analysis of Five Major Codes', Wiley stated that the human resource managers in good ethics could improve the employees' integrity and proficiency to their job and confidentiality to the secrets of their own company. From the above mentioned articles, it can be seen that ethics is playing an important and special role in human resource management and arousing employees' work motivation. In one word, good ethics can encourage employee motivation.

However, there are also some scholars who think that ethics have no relation with employee motivation. Some authors disagree with the above mentioned opinions and as far as they are concerned that every person is rational and their every decision should be in accordance with their interests, especially their economic interests. In their opinion, there is no relation between ethics in HRM and employee motivation. Taylor, the father of Scientific, proposed a management style of 'the carrot and stick'. In his opinion, everyone was considered to be an economic person or materialistic person, and the companies only carry out economic incentives to arouse their working motivation.

Meanwhile, Taylor also had the opinion that the leaders should adopt some mandatory supervising and punishment and only by this, the employees can make some efforts to achieve companies' objectives. Therefore, what the managers only can do to arouse employees' motivation is to give them more salary. From Taylor's opinion, it can be concluded that according to him, there is no relation between ethics in HRM and employee motivation. Some modern scholars totally agree with Taylor's opinion, such as Ebrahimi, Petrick and Young. In the article of 'Managerial Role Motivation and Role-related Ethical Orientation in Hong Kong', they stated that the relationship between managers is competitive and everyone wants to win in the competition.

In the process of arousing employees' motivation and retaining, managers make every effort to achieve their purposes regardless of whether their behavior is against the ethics or not. According to their opinion, there is no relation between good ethics in HRM and employee motivation. In the article of 'Human Resource Management and Volunteer Motivation', the author Blank stated that in order to arouse employee motivation, the managers could adopt feasible working method to make every employee learn about the company's objectives and how they can achieve the companies' objectives, especially to empower some employees.

Only by this, the employees can be motivated. From the above mentioned articles, it can be seen that there are also some scholars who think that ethics have no relation with employee motivation. In their opinions, every employee is rational and materialistic and what the managers can do to arouse employee motivation is only by some economic incentives and right working method. In the above two parts, this essay has stated two totally opposite opinions about the relation between the ethics in HRM and employee motivation.

Some authors think good ethics in HRM will encourage employee motivation and then they not only attract talents but also can develop and retain talents. But other authors disagree with their opinion, and according to their opinions every employee is rational and what they care about is their own interests, especially economic interests. As to the opinion of the author of this essay, there is some relation between ethics in HRM and employee motivation. Every person is 'social man'.

During the process of the motivation, money and some economic incentives just locate in the second place and the most important factor to arouse employees' motivation is the socio-psychological factor. Because everyone has the demand of communicating with other people and being accepted by the society, the main motivation source is the satisfaction degree from the society.

Therefore, the managers should not take every employee as a servant and should respect every employee and give them an equal status within their company. If the managers are selfless and obliging, they can model truthful behavior in the working process for the employees. Under this circumstance, the employees will do their jobs with their heart and soul. What's more, some companies have already gone bankrupt due to the scandals on the ethics in HRM, such as Enron Company and Arthur Andersen.

Managers in Enron Company demanded the accountant to cook the book and after the scandal broke, the employees in Enron took working for Enron as a humiliation and their working motivation will lower and even lose completely. The lessons of Enron Company have raised loud voice for improving ethics level of managers. Therefore, there is a relation between ethics in HRM and employee motivation and good ethics will encourage employee motivation. As what is introduced in the first part of this essay, human resource management is very important for each company because the human resource managers are responsible for taking measures for attracting, developing and retaining talents.

What's more, the talents are the main backbone for the development of the company. However, many ethics problems are raising today. Therefore, some authors have written essays to point out that there is a relation between ethics in human resource management and employee motivation and according to their opinions, good ethics will encourage employee motivation.

However, some scholars disagree with their opinions and they have also written some essays to state their own opinions. All of them consider people rational and materialistic and employee motivation is only up to the economic incentives regardless of the ethics in HRM. Between these two different opinions, the author of this essay tends to support the first idea that good ethics will encourage employee motivation.

Because with the improvement of people's life, what people care about nowadays is not the salary but the respect from other people, such as their leaders and their colleagues. In conclusion, according to this essay, good ethics in HRM is very important for companies to arouse employee motivation.
