must also email your lecturer within one week of submitting

Format: Telephone report: Weeks 6–7 of your Internship placement
to verbally discuss your learning goals, progress and critical
reflection questions with your lecturer
Weighting: Result recorded as SR (Satisfied Requirements) or Fail
Aims and objectives
This assessment requires you to professionally report and discuss your Internship and
learning goal progress. Key aims are to develop and demonstrate your professional
telephone manner and verbal reporting abilities, and give you the opportunity to
critically evaluate your underlying values, beliefs and assumptions that surround
your Internship placement and learning goals. Use your fortnightly Reflective Journal
activities contained in the online Study Guide to inform and assist with preparing for
this assessment. This task is designed to provide a strong foundation for a successful
Internship and facilitate lifelong learning skills.
Preparing for your phone call
As a requirement of your previous assessment, you will have already confirmed a
telephone appointment time for this assessment. During your phone call, you will be
given the results and verbal feedback on both this assessment and Assignment 1.
Prior to your phone call, prepare notes so that you will be confident to report on the
progress of your Internship and your goals and to discuss the questions outlined below
under the heading ‘Becoming critically self-reflective’. Note that during your phone
call, your lecturer may elect to focus on several or all of the questions below, so be
prepared.
Becoming critically self-reflective – questions that may
be discussed during your phone conversation with your lecturer
The following questions are adapted from Fisher (n.d.) as a means of assisting the
process of critical reflection. You do not need to submit written answers to these
questions – but it is a requirement of this assessment that you are adequately prepared
to discuss these questions during your phone call with your lecturer:
1. What aspects of your background experience and knowledge may have influenced
your choice of learning/career goals?
2. What are the main values that underpin your learning goals?
3. What underlying beliefs do you think you may be taking into your Internship
placement?
4. What assumptions do you think you might be making about your placement,
supervisors and colleagues?
5. What biases are you taking into your new workplace?

Marking criteria
To pass this assessment item you must:
• demonstrate a professional telephone manner and your verbal reporting skills
when discussing the content of this assessment with your lecturer
• comprehensively answer the nominated ‘Becoming critically self-reflective’
questions during your phone conversation with your lecturer.
Lecturer notes for this assessment item will be retained on file for use by the
Internship team for ongoing research into the Internship Program.
Assignment 3: Part A – Elluminate Business
Presentation
Due: PowerPoint slides emailed to your Lecturer by 5 pm Monday
23 April 2012
Presentation date Monday 23 April – Friday 4 May 2012
(session time to be negotiated with your lecturer)
Length: Maximum of 4–5 PowerPoint slides
Presentation time is 10 minutes (7 minutes presentation and
3 minutes question time). You must attend the full session of
1.5 hours
Weighting: Result recorded as Satisfied Requirements (SR) or Fail

Aims and objectives
This assessment is designed to give you practice in a simulated business presentation
environment and integrate many of your earlier studies. You will present a concise
business proposal that critically evaluates and solves an important issue relating to
your organisation to a panel of Managers/Board of Directors (small group of fellow
interns). You will demonstrate insight into your professional field, creativity, problemsolving,
analytic skills, professionalism, ability to be persuasive and, above all, your
ability to think strategically, like a manager. We encourage you to gain ideas and
feedback from colleagues and supervisors on the viability of your potential solution/s
before making your presentation.
Guidelines
• Present a brief overview of the key challenges that your organisation will need to
address in order to maintain a competitive edge (e.g. recruitment and retention,
product development, staff engagement, induction processes, marketing concepts,
an improvement to specific operational or logistical processes, corporate social
responsibility, changes in the external environment, change management
processes etc.).
• Choose one of these challenges and create a proposal aimed at persuading a panel
of Managers/Board of Directors to take up your innovative, well-researched,
viable and realistic business solution that addresses your chosen challenge.
• Your presentation should clearly outline your recommended solution/s and present
a sound justification based on your observations, experiences and research.
Consider what opposition the panel of Managers/Board of Directors may have to
your proposal.

• Include budget details where appropriate.
• A minimum of three (3) different academic references are required for this
assessment.
• You will gain feedback from the panel (your fellow students) in regards to your
presentation.
Similarly you will be expected to provide constructive feedback to your fellow
students on their proposal.
Further information will be provided during the Session.
Marking criteria
Your presentation must clearly show that you:
• can present to a professional industry standard using well-constructed PowerPoint
slides
• are able to make a critical evaluation of current work practices in the organisation
in which you are working
• can present a realistic, sound business proposal aimed at solving an existing
business problem
• are professional and innovative in your approach to research and problem solving
• act in a collegial manner and provide constructive feedback to your fellow interns
• include a minimum of three relevant academic references
• are able to correctly reference and accurately acknowledge all sources of
information and post the list of references to the Discussion Board thread.
Assignment 3: Part B – Major report
Due: Friday 8 June 2012
Length: 3000 words
Format: Upload your assessment through the designated Assignments
function on MySCU and post a written copy to the School
of Tourism and Hospitality Management External Studies

Report background
The objective of this final assignment is to integrate the knowledge you have
accumulated during your studies and assist you in reflecting on your current learning.
The report provides an opportunity to express and illustrate the level of knowledge
acquired throughout your degree and indeed from your most recent Internship
experiences. It integrates the reflections and activities from your Reflective Journal
into a cohesive report that showcases your overall learning and professional
development achieved throughout your degree. Additionally you have the opportunity
to make recommendations for future course and Internship advancements.
A key component of your report is the Personal Impact and Reflection section. The
importance of reflective practice for management professionals is well-documented
(see for example Richert 1990; Schön 1996; Carson & Fisher 2006). ‘Reflection
has been described as a process of turning experience into learning. That is, a way

of exploring experience in order to learn new things from it’ (Boud 2001, p. 10). It
is therefore an ideal way in which to explore the learning outcomes of Internship(51Due责任编辑:charlie)


placements. In the workforce, reflective practice is when managers critically
evaluate their surroundings and the events in which they are involved from different
perspectives. Rather than seeing such events as closed chapters, effective managers
consciously take time out to evaluate past, present and future work-related scenarios,
considering their intuitive responses and actively searching for valuable lessons and
means of improving future professional performance. Your search should involve
reference to relevant theories and readings from your university studies as well as
industry journals and databases which can be accessed online through the University
Library. Integral to this process is recognising that reflection often involves exploring
challenging events in order to gain insight and understanding (Boud 2001). It
is during such reflection that you will become more aware of the synthesis and
synergies between your theoretical learning and real-life practice as you consider how
theoretical learning is applied and adapted in your Internship workplace.
Often it is not until towards the end of your placement during a forced or voluntary
reflective period that you begin to realise the full extent of your learning and
achievements. Taking the time to do this is an important part of the learning cycle, and
development of your critical reflection skills will improve your potential as a manager.
Note: While you are not required to submit your Reflective Journal in its entirety, you
will notice that edited and refined versions of these fortnightly activities will neatly
slot into each section of your report. Completing the Reflective Journal activities as
scheduled will ensure that you make significant and timely progress on this report
throughout your Internship, and will maximise your work integrated learning.
Do not attempt to complete this report on the weekend before it is due or, heaven
forbid, the night before! Almost a decade of marking experience and honest feedback
from previous students confirms the folly of such an approach. You will need to spend
time editing your report to ensure that it flows smoothly between sections.
As you are now working in industry it is imperative that you demonstrate your ability
to prepare a professional, industry-standard report and your Internship Major Report
