The impact of technological factors on Algeria’s oil and gas industry -

First of all, the constraints of surface facilities have adversely impacted on the production amount of Algeria’s oil and gas industry. The production facilities today cannot generate enough pressure to drain the gas and oil up, declining the yield of gas and oil gradually. To boost pressure, alternative production and reinjection zones are established except the existing main production facilities which are built in late 70s. Despite of a decrease from 40 to 28 barrels of per million dry gas, the gas production was raised from 812 to 3461 billion standard cubic feet annually with the extra processing facilities (Bayphase, 2014). Such extra processing facilities could ensure investors to obtain benefits even though the natural resources remaining less. Comment on the possible impact on the industry and how the company can benefit. Besides, for transportation, Algeria has ensured its export to Europe by constructing two pipelines with each capacity of 954 and 388 billion standard cubic feet. Hence it provides more access for the firm to reach consumers and distribute products.

Second, on the global level today, the hydraulic fracturing technology is largely used in the US and Europe to improve the oil inflow (Lukoil, 2013). With globalization of technology and knowledge, the new technology has also diffused to Algeria. But in the global level of Algeria, its hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technology has not achieved substantial improvement, and this leads to higher productions costs for shale gas than conventional gas, which will limit oil competitiveness in the global market (KPMG Africa, 2015). Hence we are going to seek collaboration with foreign partners who have advance fracking technology and are interested in the Algeria’s oil exploitation, and once the company should have access to the technology we will be very likely to capture much of the market share.

Third, the technological process has pulled the average recovery rate up, making the production of marginal and infra-marginal oil fields now economically attractive. It also means a reduction of local labor, which is called technological unemployment, that is to say the machines can replace human in doing exploitation and transportation. Today the insufficient of skilled labor has become one of the major obstacles that impede Algeria’s and even the whole Africa’s oil and gas development (ADFAU, 2009). Hence technology development would no doubt relieve the lack of skilled expertise for the oil firm.
