During the Colonial period, the establishment of settlement in New England has caused environmental change during the 17th and 18th centuries. In this essay, it is to probe into how and why English settlers transformed the Native American environment.

English settlers have transformed the Native American environment in a bad direction. According to colonial town, court, and legislative records and the literary writing of Henry Thoreau, Peter Kalm, Peter Whitney, Jeremy Belknap, and Timothy Dwight, the keeping of livestock and the civilizing of lands has lead to deforestation, which further leads to the extermination of predators such as wolves, and other animals . In addition, there are changes hard to find records such as soil fauna and flora, soil compaction, changes in the transpiration rates of forests, and so on . Then English people in New England during the 17th and 18th centuries regarded the change of landscape as a manner of civilizing. In contrast, the Native Americans worship nature, and treated the natural plants, mountain, stone with fear and respect. Basically they hunt large animals for a living. They use leather, and tendon to build a house, and make clothes and shoes; use cow dung for fuel.

The reason for transforming the environment of New England by English ecological imperialism is finally attributed to the capitalist world market system of England. In the context of globalization after the discovery of America, deterioration of the ecological environment in the New England is an unavoidable consequence of the capitalist world market system and its predatory exploitation of global resources. Under the capitalist mode of production, market rules govern the production. This determines that capitalists can not sacrifice the profits of themselves to protect the environment. The fierce market competition requires companies to strive to reduce production costs. And it is bound to be part of efforts of English people to transfer the cost of production outside the enterprise. Capitalists take advantage of the capitalist world market. In a capitalist economy, wanton exploitation of natural resources without considering the consequences is a trend that cannot be changed. Crazy occupation and control of the New England by changing the ecological environment and natural resources in the region, and the development and unlimited plunder on the ecological environment and natural resources is seen as a necessary and profitable step to maintain the capitalist world market system of England.

To sum up, English people changed the landscape of New England by cutting the trees and claiming the lands to grow crops. The local flora and fauna were also killed. They did this for energy, raw materials and markets, resulting in substantial waste of resources and environmental damage.
