Introduction

This report is to introduce the viewpoints of presidential candidates Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump on two main economic issues, one is about jobs and income, and the other is about trade and globalization. American presidential election is a significant event for all American people, as well as the people all around the world, because the presidential nominee’s position on domestic issues and their diplomatic strategies towards other countries directly impact their lives in all aspects. Among all the issues, the candidates’ viewpoints on economic issues are of crucial importance. Based on the analysis of some economic viewpoints during their campaign, we could get a better understanding of their position, as well as what would he or she brings to America and the world after becoming the next president.

1. Detailed Discussion

2.1 Background

Over the past 15 years, Americans have been promised to have more employment opportunities and a shared prosperity. However, what they went through were two serious economic recessions, one was in the stock market, and the other in the housing. Though the economic growth is recovered, the job growth delays, so does the income growth. Meanwhile, globalization and international trade, which started after world war two has accelerated driven by technological advances and increasing liberation of trade market, and it benefits America a lot. While the growing competitive low-cost labors make the American employment rate decrease and a salary gap. How to restore people’s confidence on the country and belief of having better jobs and outcomes is a priority task for the incoming president.

2.2 Viewpoints on Jobs and Income

2.2.1 Hilary Clinton’s Position on the Issue

In her speech in New York City in 2015, Hilary said that the previous generations of Americans built the greatest economy and strongest middle class the world has ever known on the promise of a basic bargain: if you work hard and do your part, you could be able to get ahead. And when you get ahead, America gets ahead (Speech, July 13, 2015).

However, it is no longer the situation. Hilary states it is time to make the bargain strong again, and her measures to achieve that is by taking such measures as practicing more job trainings for the non-skilled workers to enable them find jobs, and promoting community college education to improve employment chances. She also mentioned to reconsider the immigration laws to benefit domestic workforce, and boost women’s participation in workforce market by guarantying paid leave and access to child care.

2.2.2 Donald Trump’s Position on the Issue

In his book Crippled America, Donald Trump declares if we do what we have to do correctly, we can create the biggest economic boom in this country since the New Deal when our vast infrastructure was first put into place(Trump, p124-5).

Compared with Hilary, Trump has fewer detailed solutions on the job and income issues, but he still has several viewpoints to show his determination to make America a better country. He has demonstrated his plans for cutting taxes, reducing regulation and renegotiating international trade agreements. These measures could bring people, especially those lowly paid employees more income. Besides, he suggests slowing down immigration process and cutting down America’s imports from other countries. He also promised more spending on national defense and infrastructure, such as building more highroads and public schools. These inevitably will bring America more job opportunities.

2.3 Viewpoints on Trade and Globalization

2.3.1 Hilary Clinton’s Position on the Issue

When she was serving as the Secretary of State, Hilary once supported TPP, and described it as the golden standard. While since last autumn her opinion converted to oppose it, declaring this agreement is far from good, and could handle the exchange rate manipulation problem. She explained globalization has resulted in the unemployment rate increase, and funds flowing overseas, and the poverty within America is aggravated. Hilary promised to keep on opposing it after the election as a president.

2.3.2 Donald Trump’s Position on the Issue

Despite strongly opposed by the biggest business lobby, the US Chamber of Commerce, and totally different from the policies of Republican Party in recent years, Trump rejects free trade and supporting to use such measures as tariffs to protect America industry against the competition from overseas. He declares the globalization process, which is aggressively advocated by Democratic Party actually harm the interests of American people. Trump says globalization is moving our jobs, our wealth and our factories to Mexico and overseas (Speech, June 28, 2016). For many years, many communities in America are stuck in stagnant, and globalization virtually destroyed middle class. Trump strongly opposes low tariffs and open borders, and some trade deals promoted by Obama administration. He challenged Hilary for supporting Tran-Pacific Partnership agreement, and claimed she would surely sign it if she were elected.

3 Conclusions

In the fierce competition of the presidential election, Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump both showed their strong determination to make America back to prosperity and let people live a better life, and they bring out several suggestions and strategies they are going to enact after becoming the next president. In my point of view, regardless of the job and income issue, or the trade and globalization issue, their position on those economic issues both reflect part of the problems that America society are facing, and their solutions , in some way, could solve those thorny problems, and it is determined by to what degree would they practice what they has promised during the campaign, and how much efforts they will enforce during their administration. It needs to be proved by time.
