Text:In modern times,there are a lot of structural forms.And futhermore,even more structural forms is developing.However,post and lintel,arch,cantilever and truss is still the most widely used so far.Today my topic is truss structure.

 Truss structure  is a kind of plane or spatial lattice structure made up of several poles,which is developed from variable configuration system[1].It is mostly used in the roof and bracket of civilian house and industrial plant,as well as some bridges and crane supports[1]. 

In foreigh countries,the first truss structure was proposed by an Italian called Andrea Palladio in 1570,which was a king post truss[4]. Unfortunately,it was neglected.Until in 1758,almost two hundred years later,Ulric Grubenmann,an swiss,built the first wooden truss over the Rhine,whose span is 52 meters[1].In china ,truss was first proposed in The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival in Northern Song Dynasty[1].

There are lots of classification methods of truss.According to the connection of each two poles,truss could be divided into pin-connected truss and rigid truss.Compared with rigid truss,pin-connected truss is more used in building construction.According to the materials,it could be divided into steel truss, reinforced concrete truss,wooden truss and some combined truss.And also it could be divided into triangle Truss, ladder Truss, parallel chord truss, polygon and so on according to the appearance[2]. 

Ideally, the internal force of every pole of the truss is unique;that is shaft force.But in practice, because of the nonideal connection of the node and some other reasons,besides shaft force, bending moment and shearing force also exists,which have small influence on the shaft force.So in the interior of truss structure, upper side is pressed and the bottom side is pulled.Thus the shearing force which is caused by the external load will exhibit as the tension or stress of the axle centre[3]. 

Compared with other structure forms, truss structure has many advantages.First,it enlarges the span of other structure forms.Second, truss structure is made up of poles,thus truss system is more varios than others.Third,truss is used more conveniently than other structure forms because it could be turned out before it is put up to the building and you can put the poles togrther in air in the job site[3]. 

With more and more new materials’appearance,truss structure is developing fast.The characteristic of the new kind of truss is better.I believe the future of truss structure will be  better.
