General introduction
Construction industry is the pillar industry of a country. It plays an important role in nation-building, social development and progress. With the acceleration of economic globalization, market-oriented and information technology, as well as the continuous development of science and technology, modern construction projects have undergone tremendous changes in terms of the scale, structure, technology and environment aspects. People have recognized that building activities is a complex process, there is a need to continue to strengthen project management, thus they make use of scientific management thoughts, theories and methods to improve their management level, in order to gain a competitive edge in the fierce market, and ultimately effectively achieve the objectives of a project.
There are many issues relating to a modern construction project, such as: capital investment, risk control, conflict resolution etc. In order to ensure the requirements of duration, quality, and investment, there is a need to coordinate all factors, especially the conflict among various stakeholders. Those stakeholders are not only direct participants of a construction project, such as the project company, project management, design, supervision, construction and other units, but also the project sponsor, the surrounding communities, project-related departments of government and loan syndication etc. These stakeholders form a large organization, and the relationship between them is complex. How to coordinate the relationship between the various stakeholders is directly related to the success of a project.
Each stakeholder is a part of the total task to complete a construction project. Thus, extensive implementing the coordination management towards them is very necessary. In this sense, stakeholder management is an important content of coordination management in a construction project. Rachel Thompson points out: “Stakeholder management is critical to the success of every project in every organization. By engaging the right people in the right way in a project, you can make a big difference to its success... and to your career.” Based on this, stakeholder management is the key discipline that project managers use to win others support to achieve the success of projects and stakeholder analysis as the specific technique, used to identify the key people.
Problem statement
With the rapid development of Chinese economy, Chinese demand for housing and infrastructure construction increases. In the land of 9.6 million square kilometers in China, hundreds of thousands of sites are in operation at the same time, due to the specificities in China’s political and economic systems, as well as the degree of maturity of Chinese enterprises in their management systems, China still has many problems in stakeholder management of construction project. For instance, construction project management in China often starts from the interests of shareholders, emphasizes too much interest of shareholders and ignores the interests and aspirations of stakeholders (Lu et al., 2015). Considering from an environmental aspect, construction project management usually ignores the control towards noise, dust and pollutant emissions, resulting in a great negative impact on local residents, flora and fauna (Qi and Chen, 2014). Judging from the perspective of protection of employees' rights, the problem of worker overtime construction workers fails to be resolved (Cao et al., 2015). From point of view of the interests of local residents, the phenomenon of illegal demolitions has been found in construction projects frequently in China. Illegal demolitions not only damaged the residents' private property, but also destroyed local historic buildings, causing some large-scale violence and leading to conflicts. Ignoring the interests of stakeholders adversely affects the social image, the progress and the economic interests of Chinese construction projects, therefore, how to coordinate the conflicts of interests between stakeholders, including employees, the environment, residents is the core issue that construction project management faces in China today.
Stakeholder theory has been widely used in study on construction project management, but most studies usually focus on analysis on stakeholders, while ignoring stakeholder management, which brings stakeholder theory many problems in the application of construction project management. For example, Mok, Shen and Yang (2015) note that there is a lack of systemic ideas in terms of stakeholder management in current construction project, which lead to the failure in balancing the interests of stakeholders to damage the interests and progress construction projects. Jung et al. (2015) point out that in stakeholder management in construction project, they often pay more attention to short-term interests, and pay less enough attention to long-term benefits, which goes against sustainable development of construction projects. Heravi, Coffey and Trigunarsyah (2015) comment that current stakeholder management in construction projects are mostly passive, negative, which reduces the efficiency and increases the cost of stakeholder management to some extent. Therefore, to carry out study on stakeholder management in construction projects has a realistic significance to fill a vacancy in researches of relevant areas.
Aim and research question
Research aim of this study was taking the Mingfa Binjiang new town project  in Nanjing, China as a representative to explore the strategy of stakeholder management of construction project in China. Based on the problem statement and the research aim, the research questions were shown as follows:
To determine the interests of the various stakeholders in BJ project and evaluate the management measures towards the stakeholders of the project;
To discuss how BJ project conducts a systemic stakeholder management to better balance the conflicts for interests among stakeholders;
To explore how BJ project conducts stakeholder management positively and proactively to improve the efficiency of stakeholder management;
To analyze how stakeholder management of BJ project should balance the conflict between long-term interests and short-term interests, in order to improve the corporate image in public;
To discussion how stakeholder management of BJ project should carry out sustainable management in order to reduce energy consumption and the impact of pollution of construction work on the local natural environment and living environment.
Disposition
This paper includes six sections. The first section introduces the topic, the problem and aim of the paper, reviewing the previous research of stakeholder as well. Section 2 describes the research methodology in this paper and section 3 presents the theoretical basis of the stakeholder, states the current study of the definition and classification of the stakeholder. The detail information of the case is described in section 4. Section 5 contains the analysis of the identification, the classification and the relationship of stakeholders as well as the analysis of the structure of stakeholder governance. Section 6 combines with relevant literatures to discuss the survey results and bring forward recommendations on how BJ project improves its stakeholder management. The last section concludes the dissertation, pointing out the limitations of this study and putting forward recommendations for further research related to stakeholder management of Chinese construction projects.-P
