The obesity problem of the US has grown worse rapidly in recent years. Over 50% of the adult in America is considered overweight, and 25% of the adults have problems of obesity. The problem of childhood obesity is even more alarming, with the rate doubling since 1980 (Moss, 2013). With increase obesity rate, the risks of diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol have significant increased. It is the undeniable responsibility of the US government in the battle against obesity and reestablish a healthy nation. The most effective approaches are through increase alternatives, public education, stricter regulation, as well as the restructuring of the entire food industry and American food culture.

The first cause of the obesity problem in the US is the lack of healthy alternatives, especially for the teenagers. As many of the parents are busy working, the only affordable options of food for many teenagers is fast food, which is usually high in calorie and low in other necessary nutritious contents (Zinczenko, 2002). Also, fast food it the easiest and most convenient choices as well. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the variety of food choices for teenagers by adding more healthier restaurants that are sponsored by the government. The organization pattern and efficiency of the fast food industry should be copied to healthy food chains, to increase their strengths in competition.

The program will probably meet objections from the fast food industry. Controversies can also be raised it may increase the government expenses. Also, Balko (2004) argues that it is the responsibility of the people themselves, not the government, in the battle with obesity problems. However, the solution will not target how individuals eat, but simply providing them with the healthy options for them that are not available at the moment. Furthermore, the cost of the program is mostly in the initial phases of the investment. It will be able to generate revenue once the programs become popular. Participation of the fast food industry leaders is even welcome, to borrow their experiences and help them shift to the healthier business mode.

Lack of information on the food labeling and public awareness is another major cause for the high obesity rate. Many of the food package contain incomplete or misleading nutritious information (Zinczenko, 2002). In addition, most people would not even bother to check the packages for the calorie intake. As a result, they have no control over their daily intake level, which accumulate into the problem of obesity. Two solutions are needed for this. Firstly, a government proposed project on the newly designed food labeling system should be proposed, which is much simpler to use and more accurate. Secondly, educational programs should be conducted in schools and communities to educate the public and help them raise the nutrition intake awareness.

Due to the cost of the programs proposed, objection will be made, arguing that the money can be spent elsewhere, such as the enhancement of the medical care system directly. However, the public awareness is the core of the problem. Obesity rate and the related diseases are only the problems generated by it. Solving the core problem will not only alleviate the pressure of the US health care system indirectly, but also help the future generation establish the consciousness about health and diet, which will go on to influence and benefit later generations. Therefore, it become clear which one is of higher priority.

The third cause of the problem is the lack of a proper regulation system on the national scale. In some of the areas, the policy changes are already taking place. For example, “the prohibition of junk food in school vending machines, federal funding for new bike trails and sidewalks, more demanding labels on foodstuffs, restrictive food marketing to children, and prodding the food industry into more “responsible” behavior” are all effective ways to combat diet related obesity (Balko, 2004). Instead, healthier options can be the substitutions: a bottle of orange juice that is high in sugar can be replaced by a real orange. In addition, stricter regulations on the content of food advertisement and packaging should be launched.

Some people argue that there is no sense of freedom in the restriction of food, and the trend is viewed as the socialism of public health. However, scientific research has already shown the detrimental effects of high calorie intake, making unhealthy food no different from cigarettes. The effectiveness of such restriction will also be questioned. It should be noted that the point of the restriction is not to literally restrict and personal choices, which would be unconstitutional. The addition warning signs and regulations on the advertisements serve only as reminders and helpers for people to established an awareness before consumption. The regulations are supposed to work just like how warnings on cigarette packages have worked.

The final and most dominant cause of the diet related obesity in America is the structure of the food industry. In the supermarkets of US, most of the fresh produces are priced even higher than the processed food, per unit weight, yet the latter has much higher calorie density and singular nutritious contents. This is simply wrong. Pollan (2008) has proposed an ecological, or cultural approach that suggest the modification of the western diet. Specifically, addition of healthy food elements from other culture will enhance the variety of choice for Americans. Moreover, the entire food industry needs to be restructured to a pro-healthy and pro-fresh orientation. Subsidy on the corn should be reduced, for example, since it is the main gradient for many unhealthy processed foods.

Due to the scale of the problem, it is no easy task to restructure the entire food industry in a short period. Objectifications are likely to be originated from the difficulty to make workable plans and have the money to execute them. However, if no such determinations are made, the problem of obesity in America is only growing worse. It is true that the solution through policy alone will meet with many difficulties. Therefore, a combination of cultural, social and economic effort should be made to aid the transformation in the food industry, making the fresh produces more accessible, and affordable for the majority of people, while reducing the amount of processed food consumption.

In conclusion, the path of combating the diet related obesity will be full of obstacles from the tax payers, the fast food industry and any players whose interests is influenced in the transformation. However, there is no doubt that the creation of healthier alternatives, public awareness education, regulations on unhealthy food, and the restructuring of the US food industry are the most effective solutions to the problem. Since the problem is not only on a national scale, but also influential to the health of the future generations of America, all members of the US society should contribute what they can in battling obesity and rebuild the health of Americans.
