Introduction

Nowadays, the rapid advancement in technology and the popularity of internet has contributed to the arrival information age in modern China. People are able to realize their communication and interaction purposes through using social media platforms, such as Wechat and Webo in China. Besides, more people prefer to combine the internet technology with the business together rather than use it merely for entertainment. Accordingly, an increasing number of average people are involved in e-commerce and various social media platforms. As a result of this tendency, the emergency and the development of e-commerce and social media have brought great changes to people’s life pattern, which is of great importance to Chinese society and economy. Based on previous researches and academic articles, how e-commerce and social media influence the Chinese people can be learned.

Kantar conducted the research of Chinese social media use and presented its results in 2016. According to its findings, the number of the social media users were over half percent of the whole Chinese people. Meanwhile, there was a 17% increase when making comparisons with the number in 2015 (Martin G, 2016). However, Kantar also indicated that less and less people could get benefits from social media use, with a 4% decrease in 2016 (Martin G, 2016). More importantly, nearly 15% participants thought their life were worse than before (Martin G, 2016). For instance, the younger generation especially the post 90s are crazy about Korean drama and many Korean stars. They like to use social media platforms to share some information and show their feelings about their Korean idols. Social media provides much convenience for these young fans to form groups in order to communicate and interact with others by discussing about their favorite Korean drama and stars. In addition, they can obtain the latest information about their idols by using social media, some of whom even will go to the airports to meet their idols. It can be seen that the younger generation are being largely affected as active social media users, including their values and daily behavior. However, whether they can really learn something from this remains to be seen. Figueiredo (2014) pointed out that it was a necessity to learn how the popularity of social media was influenced by different factors, which could change the situation of information services as well. Following the popularity of social media, some further researches need to be done in order to have a basic understanding of how young people are being influenced and will be influenced through using social media. People are playing a role as frequent social media users in daily life without consciousness. For example, many people have a habit to take photos when having meals and then post the photos on their social media accounts. Then, many of his or her friends would show preferences for the shared photos or make some favorable comments. Thus, all of them are the social media participants in reality. Being unconsciously, people’s lives are being influenced and signed with social media. Therefore, many researches about the cognitive, emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral effects of media on children and adults can be used for analysis (Potter & Riddle, 2007).

The wide spread of social media has also caused great changes to other areas. According to Rapp and Beitelspacher (2013), social media playing a significant role in changing the business landscape and redefining how businesses communication channels. People can have more easy access to the e-commerce by using social media. In the meanwhile, the popularity of the e-commerce has motivated more online business enterprises to develop in their scale and increase in their sales amount. Consumers’ behavior and values are being affected as well. The research conducted by Liu Ying and his partners (2015) has helped to deeper the understanding of e-commerce through the analysis of Chinese online purchaser segmentation based on large volume of real transaction data on Taobao. It is the e-commerce that has fundamentally changed people’s consumption channels and ideas. Many Chinese are loyal users of Taobao, the biggest online shopping platforms in China. Customers are able to choose the products according to their preference from Taobao, and then get the products through delivery. With the mutual assessment between the buyers and the sellers, the whole consumption process is finished. Thus, people are enjoying the availability and convenience brought by e-commerce. Contrast to these obvious advantages, people are also being subtly changed in their life style. People used buy things in the nearby malls, but more people feel comfortable to shop online nowadays. So they need to have the online banking account for the e-commerce. In this way, their shopping habits and living habits are both changed. For the younger generation, many of them have been familiar with the online consumption process for several years. Many people would like to buy clothes, sports facilities, cosmetics, and other daily used products online. The e-commerce can help the young people to save a lot of time, and provide more choices for them. Yang, X and Wang, X (2009) presented their findings based on their investigation. According to their findings, e-commerce has greatly transformed traditional business by providing instantaneous and worldwide commercial interaction and exchange, thus some of their findings can be used to learn the influence of e-commerce (Yang, X & Wang, X, 2009).

Previous researches and findings have provided basic understandings of the important role of social media and e-commerce for the Chinese people. Many of their findings can be applied to learn the tendency and how people react to social media and e-commerce. Based on previous reflections, however, there are more things and researches to be done in order to better cope with the changing situation of social media and e-commerce. Under the changeable influence of social media and e-commerce, people are being larger and lager influenced, developing a totally new living and buying habit in everyday life. As a result, there will be some analysis of how social media and e-commerce change people’s lives according to some latest development and research findings.
