Introduction

In 2013, "haze" is the annual keyword in Chinese society. It not only damages the health of Chinese people, but also restricts the development of Chinese economy. Many scholars have published numerous articles to discuss the seriousness of this issue. Zhang Aiping et al. conducted a research and found that the haze pollution has imposed a considerable impact on the tourism industry. Many tourists would like to take the haze pollution issue into their consideration when making travelling plans. A portion of potential tourists may change or even cancel their tourism plans to adjust to or avoid the terrible weather (Zhang et, al., 2015). The article discusses the effects the haze pollution has on the tourism industry. To assist readers better understand the article, my essay firstly summarizes its major points. Then, I will illustrate my points of view on this issue. There is no doubt that China should take certain steps to deal with the haze pollution. Hence, the last part of the essay is to discuss how the public and the government should do to mitigate the haze trouble.

Summary of the Article

Zhang Aiping et al. conduct a survey on 648 potential tourists. They point that the characteristics of the sample tourists are similar to the tourists in Beijing (Zhang et, al., 2015). Hence, the conclusions got from these tourists’ responses can reflect the general situation to a great extent. They find that potential tourists’ basic knowledge about haze is limited. Only half of the tourists can distinguish the differences between the haze and the PM2.5, however, almost all of them believe that the haze pollution is very unsafe to health. With this perspective in mind, over 90% of the respondents think that the haze pollution can affect their trips (Zhang et, al., 2015). To better analyze the level of impact of haze on travel, they segment tourists into various groups (Mazanec, 1992). They find that for the sightseeing tourists, only 1% of them believe that the haze pollution could have no or slight impact on their trips. The level of impact seems to be lower for business tourists; however, more of them prefer to travel in a good weather for sure. Most tourists think that the poor visibility condition resulted from haze pollution can affect their travel mood, sightseeing quality and safety (traffic and health). These factors happen to be tourists’ most concerned factors (Xu, Chen and Ye, 2013).

My Points of View on the Opinions Proposed in the Article

I basically agree with the conclusions stated above. At the end of the article, the authors listed the questionnaire as an appendix. I try to fill in the questionnaire and find that my answers are consistent with that of most respondents. I like travelling and when making travelling plans, weather circumstance is the foremost important factors I would like to take into consideration. In On haze days, talking with my friends about the dirty environment has been a habit. However, when being asked the reasons why haze pollution forms and the differences between the haze pollution and PM 2.5, I am not sure whether my answers are comprehensive or not. I do have the experience that cancelling my trip because of the haze pollution. I remember that in the early spring of 2015, my family planned to go for a trip in the nearby cities.  Unfortunately, the day we planned to depart happened to be a serious haze day. We had to cancel our long planned trip and stayed at home. Later that day, when surfing the internet, I found that because of the haze, the highways, airports and train system in many cities have been closed. It is also easy to understand that the impact of haze on travel vary among all tourists with different purposes. The traveling purposes for most leisure travelers are to enjoy the beautiful scenery and relax themselves. The haze pollution makes the best wish become a bubble, so there is no doubt that some of these travelers choose to cancel their trip. However, for business travelers, even though they are reluctant to travel in such kind of weather, they have more important reasons to do so.

How to Mitigate the Haze Pollution?

From the discussion above, it is reasonable to say that the haze pollution has a great effect on tourism industry and the whole economy, so the next question needs to be answered is how the Chinese government should do to mitigate or even clear up haze.

Human activities integrated with certain weather conditions, such as low atmospheric pressure and low air flow rate, will result in the formation of haze. Even though human activities can affect the weather in some degree, it is almost impossible to avoid the occurrence of such weather. Hence, to mitigate the haze weather, the attention should be primarily concentrate on making adjustments on human activities. The core of the haze weather is the floating particles (Xu, Chen and Ye, 2013). As illustrated before, the particles are mainly derived from vehicles, factories and fossil fuels, so in my perspective, the methods should be focused on the three aspects. In China, different cities may have different situations, so it is difficult to confirm which of the three aspects is the largest source of pollution. However, in general, manufacturing factories take most of the responsibility. To effectively reduce these particles, government should strengthen supervision efforts and launch related regulations or laws to punish the factories that cannot fulfill the environmental standards. Factories should take it seriously and do their utmost to purify the industrial waste gas before discharging to the air. To reduce the particles generated by fossil fuels in China, especially in the northern parts, relevant heating department should lessen the dependence on those traditional energies and more rely on clean energy. Similarly, many automobile manufactures have released clean-energy vehicles. Instead of purchasing the normal ones, new customers may take these new vehicles into consideration. Meanwhile, in the workdays, Chinese people may use the public transportation rather than driving their own cars to go to work. It is not only good for the planet, but also good for his/her budget.

Everyone needs to know that mitigating the haze weather is not an easy task. Without Chinese government and its people’s cooperation, the hazardous weather may become even more severe in the future.
